Walt Disney earnings jump, thanks to 'Alice in Wonderland'
LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Aided by nearly $1 billion in worldwide grosses for "Alice in Wonderland," the Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday reported higher net income and sales that inched ahead of Wall Street forecasts.
Disney /quotes/comstock/13*!dis/quotes/nls/dis (DIS 35.28, +0.15, +0.43%) said net income was $953 million, or 48 cents a share, compared with $613 million, or 33 cents a share, for the same period a year ago. Reporting after the close, the Burbank, Calif.-based entertainment conglomerate said sales were $8.58 billion against last year's $8.09 billion.
Analysts polled by FactSet Research had expected earnings of 45 cents a share on sales of $8.39 billion.
"Alice in Wonderland" proved to be a bonanza for Disney, scoring $331 million in U.S. receipts and another $630 million overseas, much of that earned during the month of March. The film helped Disney's studio-entertainment group to a 17-fold gain in operating profits, rising to $223 million from $13 million a year ago, all on a 7% increase in revenue. Disney executives had targeted the division for improvement last year at this time.
The media-networks division, however, saw flat income on sales gains of 6%. Disney's cable group managed to eke out a 3% gain led by ESPN, but the broadcasting group's income fell 24%, due mostly to lower primetime and news ad sales.
Initial comments from Wall Street were positive, as Citi analyst Jason Bazinet called Disney's results "strong."
"While media networks margins were a little soft, studio margins were significantly better," Bazinet said in a note to clients.
The company's parks division saw a 2% gain in revenue but a 12% drop in income. Higher fuel costs and promotions on its Disney Cruise Line were responsible for the decrease.
Disney Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo said that reservations for its parks were down 10% for the current quarter, but added that it wasn't surprising due to the fact that pricing is creeping up from recessionary levels.
"Consumers are still out there waiting for bargains. We are waiting for each other to blink," Rasulo said, later adding: "We play the rate and volume and lever that on a daily basis."
Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger added, however, that as the company has raised its hotel rates closer to normal levels and in the past week has seen stronger bookings, which he said was an encouraging sign.
Still, while Disney shares ended trading Tuesday up 1.3% to $35.76, meager results at parks and media networks left the company's stock struggling after hours. Shares were down 2.9% to $34.78 in post-session trades.
Consumer products posted sales gains of 20% that translated into a 37% gain in operating income, due largely to Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, as well as higher same-store sales at the namesake stores.
ResponderEliminarIger said that the company has seen the "most activity" in Marvel licensing deals, and added that he plans to distribute the units films once its deal with Viacom Inc.'s /quotes/comstock/13*!via/quotes/nls/via (VIA 38.49, +0.16, +0.42%) /quotes/comstock/13*!via.b/quotes/nls/via.b (VIA.B 34.57, +0.08, +0.23%) Paramount Pictures unit is fulfilled.
Disney completed its purchase of Marvel at the end of 2009, and Paramount controls the distribution rights for several Marvel properties, including last week's blockbuster release of "Iron Man 2," which made more than $128 million in U.S. receipts during its debut, fifth on the all-time list.
Another acquired Disney unit, Pixar, is planning to ramp up its production of films over the next few years, Iger said, and the division is moving into larger facilities in the San Francisco Bay area.
As part of that increased production, Pixar will be releasing a number of sequels, including "Toy Story 3" next month, "Cars 2" in 2011 and "Monsters Inc. 2" in 2012. But Iger stressed the unit was mixing those sequels with a number of original releases, including "Newt" in 2011 and "Brave" in 2012.
"We are not forcing sequels into the system unless we have directors and storytellers who have good ideas for the sequel," Iger said. "We didn't mandate a sequel on any of those."

NOOOOOOO!!!! YO QUERÍA QUE SALIERA ESA PELIIIIIII!!!!!!! TENÍA TODO PLANEADO Y LO ARRUINARON!!!!!
ResponderEliminarLO ÚNICO Q M FALTA ESPERAR ES D Q LA CAMBIEN ALMENOS PARA DEPUÉS DEL 2012!
